JK/SK
Today JK and SK's continued our activity of 'Cat and Mouse’ . Over the last few days every student was given an opportunity to be either a 'Cat' or Mouse'. Pictures of our activities will be posted a little later in the week.
Cat and Mouse
- As a class we first discussed how to stay safe during our parachute games before proceeding
- One or more students is the mouse and they go underneath the parachute and try to crawl underneath and not to get caught by the cat
- Another student is the cat and goes on top of the parachute to try and catch the mouse
- All other students shake the parachute to make it more difficultHere is an example of the game - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1scDMBn9irA
Grades 1 & 2
Today grade 1 & 2 students were engaged in anther parachute game named “Sharks and Lifeguards”. The activity allowed for students to work together and communicate in order to not get pulled under the parachute by the Shark. Rules of the game are posted below.
Sharks and Lifeguards Rules
Begin by having the children sit down with their legs straight under the parachute making waves with their arm motions. These are the swimmers. One child is picked to be the shark and goes under the parachute. He or she must pull the swimmers by the legs to get them under the parachute and make them sharks too. One or two children are the lifeguards and they walk around the circle, and watch the swimmers. If a swimmer feels themselves being pulled they can call the lifeguard for help. When a swimmer is being grabbed and pulled under the parachute by a shark the lifeguard can save them by grabbing onto their arm. If the lifeguard can reach them before the swimmer is pulled completely underneath they can continue to be a swimmer. The game ends when there are no longer enough swimmers around the parachute to make waves.

Grades 3-6
Today Grade 3 - 6 students participated in another collaborative activity name "Bench Ball". Students were required to work in teams in an attempt to get everyone from their group onto the opposing teams bench in order to be successful.
Bench Ball Explained....
- Split the kids into 2 even teams.
- Split the playing area into two even sides (the centre line in the gym works perfectly).
- Send one player from team X across the center line to stand up on the bench on team O’s side.
- Send one player from team O across the center line to stand up on the bench on team X’s side.
- The object of the game is to get everyone from your team onto the bench on the other side of the center line.
- The only way you are allowed to cross the center line and climb onto the bench on the other side is to have someone from your team, who is already on the other bench, catch the ball that you throw. They can not pick the ball up from the ground, but must catch it in the air.
- If they catch your ball, then you cross over and join them on the bench.
- Except for the two people who started on the bench, if anyone ever falls off the bench, they must return to their own side and have someone catch their ball again before they can rejoin their teammates on the bench.
- You are allowed to block the catchers on the bench by throwing balls at incoming balls, or by simply holding balls in you hands and whacking incoming balls away.
- You are not allowed body contact, and are not allowed to jump on, or away from, a bench to catch a ball.
- The first team to successfully get all of their members standing on the bench is the winner.
Here are some photos of the students working together in a collaborative activity named ‘Island Travel’ that we played yesterday.

JK/SK
Over the last couple of days students have been introduced to some new and exciting parachute games. All JK and SK classes have been engaged in warm up activities involving the parachute as well as some new arm stretches. Students have learned activities such as ‘Popcorn’, ‘Colour Switch’ and ‘Cat and Mouse’ . These games allowed students to practice their tactile skills while recognizing colours and making quick decisions while being aware of their surroundings. The rules of one of the games we played as well as an example are posted below.I will be posting some pictures of our experiences later in the week so please check back in.
Cat and Mouse

Grades 3-6
Today, grade 3 - 6 students participated in a collaborative activity named ‘Island Travel’. In the activity students were required to communicate with their group/team mates in order to safely travel from one island(gym mat) to another without falling in the water(gym floor). There were also obstacles placed all around the gym floor to encourage team strategy as students tried to choose the shortest route to their destination(end of the gym). The students did a fantastic job communicating with each other and showed great spirit by encouraging their team mates while they were playing. I will be posting some pictures of our experiences later in the week so please check back in.

COLD WEATHER POLICY!
St. Jude's Academy Cold Weather Policy
Below you will find the steps taken at St. Jude's Academy to ensure students stay safe and have fun during the winter months.
- Reduce amount of time students spend outdoors when the temperature is –20 degrees Celsius or colder, with or without the wind chill. Students will stay indoors when the temperature is -20 degrees Celsius or colder, with or without wind chill.
- Understand that some medical conditions may increase sensitivity to cold. Parents should consult their physician and provide a written notice if a child has a need to stay indoor.
- Ensure students are dressed warmly, covering exposed skin: insulated boots, winter weight coats, mittens, hats, neck warmers.
- Ensure students change wet clothing or footwear immediately.
- Although these conditions are unlikely to occur during the school day, ensure that all staff are able to recognize and treat symptoms of frostbite and hypothermia. Given plenty of warm fluids to prevent dehydration.
- When children are outside, be watchful for shivering or signs of numbness in faces, ears, hands or feet.
- Educate children in dealing with cold weather: drinking plenty of fluids, dressing warmly, and recognizing signs of cold injury.

Friday January 8
JK/SK
Today students were introduced to some new additions to our game of Red Light Green Light in the gymnasium. Using a circular pylon as a steering wheel, students "drove'(walked/ran) all around the gym with their eyes on the 'road'(gym)and two hands on their steering wheel at all times. Here are some of the directions students had learned to follow during the game:
Green Light= means go
Red Light = means stop
Brown Light = means you have to drive very slowly through the mud
Pink Light = means hop around while your driving
Rainbow Light = means you can choose any of the activities mentioned above
Grades 3-6
Today, grade 3 and 4 students worked on creating new class rules in groups. After co-creating the rules, we discussed them as a class. Grade 5 and 6's engaged in another ice breaker activity called the 'Tangled Web'. Students spread out across the Gym and were asked to think of 1 or 2 unique facts about themselves. Holding a ball of yarn, I began the activity by introducing myself and then shared one unique fact about me. I then rolled the ball of yarn to a student without letting go of the end of the yarn. The student who received the ball of yarn then introduced themselves and also shared one unique fact. This continued until the ball of yarn was passed to everyone in the class, creating a giant web. Following the activity I started a discussion about how this activity relates to the idea of teamwork -- for example, the students need to work together and not let others down. To complete our discussion I had one student drop their strand of yarn which demonstrated to students how the web weakens if the class isn't working together.

Welcome Back!
Hello everyone and welcome back! I hope everyone had a great holiday and a great start to the new year.
JK/SK
Both yesterday and today, we have been playing icebreaker games to get to know each other, reviewed class rules and participated in fun activities such as Sharks, Mermaids, and Oceans and a modified version of Red Light Green Light.
Grades 3-6
Students were introduced to a Fact vs Fib game to get to know a little more about Mr. Slyk. I presented students with 12 statements about myself, 8 of which were true and 4 that were false. Students were responsible for trying to guess which 4 were false, they couldn't believe that Mr. Slyk was born with 1 leg longer than the other...it's TRUE! We had a lot of fun throughout this activity. They have also been engaged in small group work where they were responsible for creating new class rules which will be further discussed tomorrow.
Grades 1 & 2
During our Fact vs Fib icebreaker game students were introduced to 12 written statements( 8 of which were true, 4 of which were false) about Mr Slyk. The goal was to work as a class to determine which statements were true and which were false. Many students couldn't believe that Mr. Slyk has been on T.V two times and that he has been on the second largest roller coaster in the world. We had a great time during this activity! The grade 1's also went over class rules and played an exciting game of electric fence with some of the students from Oakwood Academy. With the grade 2's we will continue going over class rules tomorrow.
Grades 7/8
Yesterday students were introduced to their performance task and chose their groups for the assessment. Today we went over the rubric in detail and discussed what steps need to be taken in order to be successful in creating their game. They had class time today to work with their group on their task and we will continue to practice tomorrow. Presentations for the Performance Task will begin on Monday January 11.
Grade 7 and 8's, remember to ask for any materials that you require for your game by Friday.
