WELCOME!

Hello everyone! My name is Mr. Slyk I want to take this opportunity to welcome all students and parents to my Health and Physical Education classroom and blog. Beginning in the new year, you may possibly find me walking, jogging, running, playing soccer, cricket, snowboarding or hoping around like a kangaroo alongside my students. I strongly believe that by setting a positive example for my students, I will encourage them to lead healthy active lives. Although I currently reside in Mississauga, I will be calling the gymnasium my new home for the next 6 months and I am excited to share my knowledge and experiences with you. I also cant wait to learn more about everyone, your past experiences in physical education and your interests, so that together we can create a health and physical education environment that is engaging, inclusive, safe and fun for all.
I am a graduate of York University’s Urban Diversity consecutive education program and am exited to begin my first year at St. Jude’s Academy. My goal as a Health and Phys-Ed teacher is to ensure that all students are having FUN. I strongly believe if students aren't having fun, they are not motivated to learn. I will include all students, challenge all students, provide all students with opportunities to inquire about learning experiences and give them multiple opportunities to grow and succeed.

Students in my class will engage in Physical education with some emphasis on ‘Teaching Games for Understanding’ where students learn fundamental movement skills, concepts and principles that they can apply to a wide range of physical activities rather than emphasizing specific sports skills. Through this students learn to understand WHY they are learning specific skills and must think about how specific movement strategies may make them more or less successful throughout the game.In Addition to this, living skills are also integrated throughout the strand.

“With Teaching Games for Understanding, students learn how to think critically and problem solve, how to negotiate ideas with different people, how to be leaders. They also learn self awareness and how to adapt in different situations. These life skills are as important as the physical skills when it comes to leading a healthy active life,”
James Mandigo, Associate Professor at Brock University’s Department of Physical Education & Kinesiology

I am excited to be a part of the St. Jude’s community and look forward to meeting and getting to know everyone.
